Welcome!

High Country Walks is a freedom walking excursion into sub alpine wilderness. We offer an intimate experience of the high country on a privately owned working farm.

With 100 years of family occupation the owner/operators are 4th generation farmers. Vast space, beauty and a passion for our place and people as Kaitiaki we are caretakers of the land and would love to share it with you.

Low and highlands form a rich tapestry revealing distant river flats, remnant beech forest, lofty sky scapes and a diverse mix of vegetation. The western side of the valley comprises semi developed tussock land and rolling slopes down to a collage of rich colourful paddocks. For a completely different contrast continue your journey to the eastern side of the slate range and welcome rock experiencing native plants, animals and 1000 hectares of freehold ecologically protected wilderness.

Signs of early occupation remain as you follow the lines of the water race and wonder at the ingenuity and design of the old mud hut, a small reconstructed building made of sod (mud bricks) built by the Chinese during the gold rush in the 1870’s.

We are located in Garston approximately 1 hour south of Queenstown, 45 minutes from Queenstown Airport, 1 hour 15 minutes north of Te Anau and 2 hours north of Invercargill.

Taking in the four seasons our aim at High Country Walks is to offer a memorable and private experience all year round including a choice of walks to suit individual requirements and abilities.
